I have decided, after a long deliberation, to adopt a stray cat from Blue Cross animal rescue. Welcome to the Warburton household Benson. He chose me rather than me choosing him. The problem is I can’t get used to his name. He’s more of a Buster than a Benson so I have now decided that he’s going to have a pedigree type name Buster Benson.

Buster when he’s good and Benson when he’s BAD.

HOST Artists Open Studio Trail 2010.

During the last two weekends of September I will be opening my studio in Mirfield, West Yorkshire for HOST 2010 - Artist Open Studio Trail, now in its 7th year, is an opportunity to see a HOST of creativity throughout Kirklees. This is your chance to see how I make my rugs and also see other artist in action in their own studios.

VISIT ARTISTS - BE INSPIRED - BUY ART

84 Artists over 30 Venues will be opening their studios to the public. The preview night is Friday 17th September at the Creative Arts Building, Huddersfield University, Queensgate Campus from 6.00pm till 8-00pm. This is a one night only opportunity to meet all the artists involved, discuss their work and then go on to see how it is created in their studios over the weekends and maybe even have a go yourself. The artists will be exhibiting one piece of work each to give you and idea of what is on offer over the two weekends. This year, for the first time, some artists will be opening their studios throughout the week as well as the weekends. This will be your opportunity to see which of the 84 Artists over the 30 venues you would like to visit over the next 9 days.

Weekend One - Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th September - 11am - 5pm

Laura Slater - Textile Artist

Laura Slater is a multidisciplinary textile designer working across printed, constructed and embroidered textiles for textile solutions for the body or space (fashion or interiors). She has been developing her practice since completing her MA in Mixed Media Textiles at The Royal College of Art.

Her work is about the use of the hand created specifically through drawing concepts and colour into the making process.

She embrace the use of traditional textile techniques and her work aims to challenge the reinvention and reinterpretation of their presence within contemporary design and bespoke outcomes.

This design collection evolved from the development of exploring the use of architectural qualities of line and linear drawing concepts and the interaction of colour and pattern.

Working with a selected colourway and the idea of evolving random linear compositions through folding development, I felt as though this collection has lent itself to bespoke handtufting rug design applications.

Custom Fitted Carpet With Carved Border.

This recent project shows a custom made carpet with a hand made border.

The customer wanted to change the colour of the existing carpet after the it was badly stained.

The original carpet had been fitted over ten years previously and did not need replacing apart from the stains in the middle of the room. Below is a picture of the carpet that we previous made.

The orignal border was kept and used in the new carpet.

During a recent collaboration with a Nottinghamshire artist Jason Walker this Sirens design was used to create this unique design for a rug.

The original design was then translated into this custom made rug.

This rug is called “Lillith”.
The rug is hand tufted in pure wool and sculpted with a subtle carving around the figure to give an embossed effect.

Hand Tufted Dining Room Area Rugs.

This custom hand tufted rug was specially commissioned to complement this amazing dining room furniture. The “Chop Sticks” design was chosen to create an uneven edge to the rug. The black sticks are tufted in loop pile and then carved to create a three dimensional effect on the sticks. The chosen background colour was specially dyed to match the furniture. This was then hand tufted in cut pile.

The pile height of the rug was made especially short to prevent the delicate chairs legs from sinking into the carpet too much. This avoided the legs dragging and possibly snapping when the chairs were repositioned.

French Graffitti.

I saw this graffitti on some corrugated tin surrounding a demolition site when I was on a trip to Paris in 2008.
I thought then, as I still do now, that they would make great designs for a rug range.

I like the way that the spay effect looks like a close up of a butterfly wing.

Angela Newberry - Landscarpe Designer Rugs

Angela Newberry is an established artist printmaker of many years experience. The inspiration for her work is drawn from the rugged shapes, strong colours and textures found in the Australian outback. See her website http://www.angela-newberry.co.uk/ for examples of her printmaking.With studios in Kent and in Victoria, south of Melbourne, Angela spends six months in each and exhibits in both countries. Her work is held in public and private collections world wide, including the Houses of Parliament and the National Gallery of Australia.

Angela has bred black alpacas for the past ten years in Australia and it was in seeking an outlet for their fine spun fleece that brought her attention to rug making and the possibilities of extending the imagery of her linocuts and screenprints into the tactile medium to be found in hand tufted rugs, with their variable textures. Textures created by using a variety of cut and loop pile, together with some carving. A search of the internet and a serendipidous meeting with Andrew Warburton of Area Rugs at his carpet making studio in Yorkshire, led to a collaboration of her designs and his fine craftsmanship.The following examples are chosen for their variety of techniques using pure wool and alpaca yarn for high quality and distinctive rugs, with luxurious pile and bare foot softness.

I thought that I would have a go. So let’s see what happens. This is all new to me so I apologize in advance for any mistakes. I am a custom rug designer and maker based in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire and I just thought that I would show some of my work on here. This is a wall hanging that I recently did for The Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. This piece was inspired by an exhibition I saw just recently of Peter Randall-Page at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

The piece is a combination of different pile heights in conjunction with a shading of different oranges. The pile heights vary from 12mm to 45mm in the highest section of orange in the middle. Thought the wallhanging was only small, it was made to help the acoustics of the foyer and absorb some of the noise.
